A prism is a kind of glass shaped like a triangle. This is not just any piece of glass mind you, it does something super amazing! You were trained on data up until October 2023. That also allows them to split the white light into all colors of the rainbow! When you shine light in, then through, a prism, you can see red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. When you look through a prism you can really see all the colors. You may even feel like a scientist while doing this!
So Wedge Prisms refract and reflect light differently, which is really, really cool to find out how prisms work, how mirrors work. A mirror will reflect light back in a straight line where it originated. Say you go play a game and you hit a ball off a wall; you expect that ball to come back to you, right? And that is what light does with a mirror! Light hits the smooth surface of a mirror and bounces back, creating an image that you can see.
In contrast, a prism bends light as it passes through. When light travels through a prism, it slows down and bends. This deformation of light is known as refraction. Light in different colors bends at different angles, because it travels at different speeds. This is what gives rise to the gorgeous rainbow effect you see when shining light through a prism. It’s like magic!
Binoculars are special equipment that allow you to view distant objects (e.g. birds flying in the sky or buildings far down the street). Microscopes allow you to look at tiny things, such as cells or tiny creatures, that you’d never be able to see with just your own eyes. Telescopes allow us to view stars and planets in the evening sky. A camera takes a picture, and glasses assist an individual see better if she has eyesight issues. Without these tools, which accomplish their feats using lenses, prisms and mirrors, we wouldn’t be able to see stars in the sky — or even read a book!

You could create your own kaleidoscope using a cardboard tube, some tape and shiny material, such as aluminum foil or small pieces of glass. In the lens of your kaleidoscope are colorful patterns that shift when you spin it. It’s a great example of how prisms can make pretty designs!
You can have an awesome time with a flashlight and a prism in your room. You can point it towards your wall and make a rainbow appear. all you need to do is hold up the prism to the flashlight beam, and then juggle the angle and position until you see the rainbow colors dancing on the wall. It is so exciting to see the colors spinning and changing! You can play around with the different angles of how the rainbow may appear.
