Have you ever seen a rainbow? That is always beautiful sight and gives us happiness! The proper name for a rainbow is a refraction of light through small droplets of water suspended in the atmosphere. This bending forms a spectrum of colors in an arch in the sky. It is not an ordinary shape but a unique shape called a triangular prism. One end has a triangle and the other end has a rectangle. If you take a beam of light and place it through a triangular prism at some angle and place it to a white screen, you can see a spectrum of colors. This is because as it passes through the prism the light bends which divides into several colors. That you can see so many colors from only one beam of light, like magic!
Light passing through a triangular prism will first bend toward the base of the prism. Then as it exits the prism, it bends away from the base and disperses into its 7 colors. Its this bending and hiking apart that makes the great old rainbow. Isn't it incredible that one simple thing can build something so beautiful?
You may ask your self about how does the color of a rainbow are arranged. It’s not just random! The order of the colors is always the same. In a rainbow, red is the outer band and violet is the inner. Different colors have different wavelengths, that is, the distances between waves of light, so this is a special order.
Being at the red end of the spectrum, the wavelength is the longest and bends the least — which ensures that it stays on the outer edge of the path. Violet, which has the shortest wavelength, gets bent the most, and it is placed on the inside. As the light runs through the prism, the other wavelengths bend various amounts, isolating the hues into a specific request. This also helps explain why we always see the order of the colors of the rainbow as we do.
You can even create your own rainbow with a triangular prism at home using a few inexpensive items!
