A plano-convex lens is a type of lens that consists of two different curves. It has a flat side and a curved side. The flat side is termed plano surface whereas the curved side is called the convex surface. It’s the kind of lens that is made of clear materials like glass or plastic, so you can see through it easily. Traditionally it is a disk or a spherical-like form. One side of the disk is usually flat and the other side is typically curved. Plano convex lenses can be of different size and thickness based on the application in the device.
Also, as its name implies, a plano convex lens is a lens that indeed bends light. Light rays that strike the surface of the curved side of the lens bend their path — refract. This essentially means that the light is refracted as it travels through the lens. Once the light passes through the lens it exits out the flat side and is bent again. How much the light bends actually depends on a couple of things including the lens curvature, the angle of light entering the lens and the lens material. This bending of light allows plano convex lenses to function in a variety of scenarios.
Glasses: A lot of people used to wear glasses, which are simply plano convex lenses that are used to gain better vision. These lenses are inserted into frames that are then seated in front of the eyes. They make light bend in a way that allows people who are nearsighted or farsighted to see properly.
Cameras: Plano convex lenses are attached in the cameras to concentrate the light on the sensor (which captures the images). A lens with a curved shape can make pictures sharper and clearer, so when you take a photo, it looks pretty good.
Telescopes: When you see the stars or planets in a telescope, you are seeing them using plano convex lenses. These lenses serve to enlarge visible objects savored at a distance by the spectator's eye. This will help people better map their night skies.
Projectors: plano convex lens is used in projectors which are optical devices that can project images on a wall or a screen. These glasses then used to focus then focus light and make the picture bigger, to see lots of easier into more technical jargon to see.
Fabrication of plano convex lenses is relatively easier and therefore one of the best aspects about them. They can be constructed from a wide assortment of materials and can be designed in various ways to suit the requirements of the device in which they are used.
